Perfect Opposites (2004)

"Perfect Opposites" is a cute little movie, LOL. Apparently, I had seen it, or maybe just part of it, on TV, before becoming admirable of MH's work. I could not remember the beginning or the ending. But I remembered the middle where Julia is at the engagement party, I think, comes out and sees her colleague smoke, the scene that Drew calls Julia to tell her he misses her, and the party scene at their neighbors' new house.

But I am getting ahead myself, let me backup a bit, LOL. The story is about a boy, Drew, played by none other than MH, who meets a girl, Julia, played by Piper Perabo. At first glance Drew likes Julia, and then Drew's roommate and friend Danny (Jason Winer) tells him that he knows Julia, and that she is taken. Of course Drew takes this as a challenge, and decides that he wants to go on a date with Julia. Julia at first resists him, but then to get him out of her hair, LOL, agrees to go on ONE date with him, and she insists that "nothing is going to come out of it", LOL. However, the next night Julia breaks up with her long time boyfriend, but not because of Drew, of course not, LOL, "it was time for them to go their separate ways", she stresses to Drew.

Oh, one more thing, they are both in school, Drew is finishing Law School, and Julia is finishing her undergrad studies. So after graduation, Drew's plans is to move to California to go after his dream of becoming a successful entertainment attorney and making lots and lots of money. He of course asks Julia to give up her exciting job offer, her lease on the new apartment, and basically all her plans and follow him across the country. Amazingly enough she agrees, LOL, of course she does, who could resist Drew's charm, or is it MH's charm, LOLOLOL.

Anyhow, after a while living together in California, Julia not being able to find a job, realizes that she has given up too much, and becomes annoyed. She gets mad all the time at what Drew does and what Drew does not, and to be fair, Drew is in his own world, trying to impress his boss, and pays little attention to Julia, and maybe pays too much attention to passerby women! Anyhow, Julia pretty annoyed, tells Drew what to say and what not to say, and what to do and what not to do, LOL. And if Drew returns the favor, LOL, and warns her when she want to buy a car, to do her math before committing to a large expense, she throws it to his face that her dad is paying for it, so it should not be a problem. Anyhow, their relationship gets to a point that Drew, even though is still in love with Julia, decides to move out, reasoning that they are not good for each other at the moment.

OK, by the time that Drew moves out, Julia is employed at the place that her neighbor made a referral for her, and so the first order of business for her, first thing Monday morning, after Drew leaves, LOL, is to start dating her colleague and sort of boss, because he was teaching her how to use a multimedia kind software! And not long after, when the boss man asks her to marry him, she accepts and then writes Drew to let him know she is getting married. Drew like a lost puppy, comes begging Julia to take him back, she refuses and they go their separate ways.

A few years later they meet again, Julia announces that she is divorced, Drew asks her to let's give it another go, Julia declines and says "nothing is going to come out of it". And the movie ends right here. So anyhow, this is "Perfect Opposites" for you in a nutshell, LOL.

Now let's get back to my viewing history of this movie, LOL, since I stopped and noticed MH, LOL, I have seen both the director's cut of this movie and the chopped up version they showed on TV. The chopped up version really does not work because some of the important scenes that shows how close Drew and Julia were and how they grow a part has been cut. Anyway, in the director's cut there are some outtakes that are really fun to see.

For one, it displays how much fun MH was having making that movie and how prepared he was. There is one scene, Drew and Julia's first date at the ice cream place, after MH says his line about the topping combinations; PP says that she does not remember her line. Her line is something like, "you spend a lot of time thinking about this", or something close to it, and MH add-lips to PP, "you spend a lot of time learning your lines". I thought he cleverly reminded her of her line and at the same time teased her about not knowing them. Very skillful, don't you think so?

Anyhow, if you enjoy MH's work, I am sure you will enjoy this movie, if not, I cannot make any guarantee, LOL.
